Opioid Substitution Therapy for Opioid Use Disorders

There is a massive growth globally of people struggling with problematic opioid use. The drivers include negligent prescribing of opioids such Oxynorm, MST, Morphine, Pethidine, Fentanyl to deal with pain. But underlying most cases of problematic drug use is experiences of trauma and disconnect. In working with people who are wanting to normalise their lives again, we provide a range of complimentary services. Opioid substitution medication is used as a scaffold as it stops withdrawals and allows for both mood stabilisation. Medications like methadone are also excellent analgesics thus having a dual effect of management of pain and withdrawal Alongside the provision of evidence-based medical interventions, we also provide psychosocial support. This is required for dealing with the underlying trauma. This is provided by our clinical social worker and health coach. Therapy is not only geared at trauma release, but also on the development of new routines and habits. We are harm reduction practitioners and advocates, maintaining that drug use should be destigmatized and decriminalized. In short, our approach is human rights focused and individualized. We maintain that connection, support, and evidence-based medical interventions should all be available to those wishing to normalize their lives.
